Playing Cards – a tablecloth and six napkins – is an ode to all Jacquard woven fabrics. Glithero was inspired by the system of punched cards that contain the design of the fabric in code and which drive the weave machines. They chose to create a fabric where the Jacquard cards were the subject of the design, rather than the means to create it, celebrating the beauty of the humble cards and bringing them into the limelight. The resulting damask table set depicts the materiality of the cards, their mesmerising flow through the machines and the beauty of the abstracted design contained in the punched holes. The accompanying napkins depict missing information – the holes punched from the cards that build up under the Jacquard puncher’s machine in the creation of the cards.
Playing Cards is a sibling of Woven Songs and forms a chapter of a bigger project about the coding patterns that unite the art forms of weaving and organ music card fabrication. Each part of the project comes together in the Made to Measure exhibition. Playing Cards was commissioned by and is held in the permanent collection of the TextielMuseum, Tilburg, NL. The the project was produced in the TextielLab.
